Clubs history

Early days,

The Original Club was formed in 1990 at Berristowe Lane, Huthwaite. This was a temporary site, due to the proximity of power cables and the high rent. After 18 months here, the founder members (John Hoggard, Frank Taylor & Steve Hickling) had negotiated a better site just outside Pinxton, they rallied round to get 11 members to share the field costs. This was to be the club's new home, where we grew, formed good friends and started to put the BMFA guidelines for safety into practice. We gained and trained very good pilots in both Airplanes and Helicopters and even commenced display flying in aid of charity. In 1996 we decided to move again when we discovered that an intended residential development plan included our flying field.

Today
We now fly from Lea, near to Tansley in Derbyshire.
We are blessed with wonderful scenery, a field with ample parking, easy access and a grass strip 140 metres x 50 metres. We have a good number of Instructors and Examiners, and take safety, harmony & fun very seriously.

A quote from John 'Hoggy' Hoggard, a member sadly no longer with us, but one of our founder members sums it all up -

"In my opinion, the club that we now have is the best in the midlands and I am so proud to be a member of Leafields Model Aircraft Club"

Our present Flying Site, Lea.

We currently have around 30 or so very friendly members and learners are encouraged to take advantage of our club instructors to attain a safe flying standard as quickly and safely as possible. The models we fly generally fall into the categories of R/C Planes and gliders.

The wind is usually down the weekly-mown grass strip, making take offs and landings quite leisurely. However, occasionally, flying is interesting when the wind is from the North West, directly over a nearby copse, sometimes causing turbulence, and crosswind take-offs and landings.
